Xinjiang Hotels: What To Know

If you’re reading this after May 2024, I have GREAT news for you!

This year, China is taking BIG STEPS to make sure that foreigners don’t get turned away from hotels. What does this mean for you?

In the past six years, I was turned away from my fair share of hotels due to the fact that they couldn’t support foreign passport holders in their systems.

However, China has taken things up a notch by trying to ensure that foreign passport holders don’t run into this issue anymore, so congratulations! Finding hotels in Xinjiang has never been easier!

Thankfully, after I started using Trip.com, I was able to avoid this issue entirely! I go over why Trip.com is (quite literally) the best app for traveling in China in this post!

300*250

Trip.com is an Asia based app, so if you’re looking for hotels in Xinjiang, you’ll see WAY more options if you use their platform.

There are a few main cities to visit in Xinjiang. The most prominent ones are Urumqi and Kashgar.

This post will give you a few recommendations for hotels in each city. But first: a quick word on safety!

Xinjiang Hotel Safety

I quickly want to address the “elephant in the room”: in the past decade, Xinjiang cropped up in the Western media quite a bit.

You can do your own research and draw your own conclusions on that, but I did write a post addressing common questions about safe travel to Xinjiang.

Read that post here: Is Xinjiang Safe For Tourists?

(Also, on the note of safety, be sure to check out my FAVORITE travel insurance option for SUPER quick quotes and coverage: Visitor’s Coverage!)

In short: traveling to Xinjiang is TOTALLY safe! But due to the region having a bit more of a spotlight on it, I highly recommend that as a foreign tourist, you choose hotels in more touristy areas.

This is simply because local police (in EVERY city of China!) are always attentive to foreigners’ presence in cities, especially if its a smaller city where foreigners don’t tend to move for work.

They may be a bit surprised if they see you stepping out of an alleyway hotel in a remote part of the city. It could leave questions as to why you’re staying there. But if they spot you in a tourist area, no questions!

I’m giving this advice more for your own comfort. But if you’re set on staying somewhere off-the-beaten-trail, and don’t mind the possibility of local police raising their eyebrows (or asking some questions), then go for it!

That being said: all Xinjiang hotels recommended in this post are in touristy areas. So you can rest easy!

Hotels in Urumqi, Xinjiang

Green Oriental Hotel Urumqi

This is the hotel we stayed at! Honestly, we thought it was perfect. It’s located right near a subway station, near all of our favorite Urumqi breakfast spots, and just a 15 minute walk from the Grand Bazaar.

The rooms were comfortable and quiet. Coming with a very reasonable price tag, we were super happy that we stayed at this hotel!

Conrad Urumqi

This hotel is located quite close to the Urumqi’s Uyhgur Museum. It is a luxury hotel, but don’t worry! Even a higher price tag in China usually won’t come close to a luxury hotel’s price in the USA.

Conrad has hotels all over China, and they are reputed as being a very high-end experience. If you want to make your trip a luxurious one, be sure to check out Conrad!

Grand Mercure Urumqi Hualing

Want luxury with a better price point? This hotel edges on luxury for a fraction of the cost of Conrad.

The location is nearer to Conrad, and farther from the Grand Bazaar. Personally, location is a big deal for me. But if you don’t mind taking cabs, and would love a budget-friendly but beautiful hotel, this is a great option!

Orange Hotel (Urumqi People’s Cinema Hotel)

This hotel is super budget friendly, and boasts an INCREDIBLE breakfast buffet! The location is also quite favorable for the shopping streets/Grand Bazaar.

This was our second choice for Uruqmi. We ended up picking the Green Oriental due to it being a bit closer to the Bazaar, as well as the fact that we opted to get breakfast outside of the hotel.

But this is a fantastic option, and would make a lovely stay in Urumqi!

Hotels in Kashgar, Xinjiang

Radisson Blu Hotel

Who doesn’t love Radisson? You can ensure a comfortable and high quality stay in Kashgar by staying at Radisson.

And by the way–nicer hotels in China’s smaller cities tend to have AMAZING prices!

Kashgar Nanjiang Global Hotel

Want a more Xinjiang-coded luxury experience? This hotel presents a comfortable and rather photogenic stay, complete with local touches.

The price doesn’t differ that much from that of Radisson; the main difference is the local touch!

Jiannan Hotel

Rated #1 for Cultural Hotels in Kashgar by Trip.com, you’ll feel like you’re in another world at Jiannan Hotel!

The deep colors and uniquely crafted furniture will have you absolutely steeped in the local culture (in the best way!). If you’re looking for a cultural experience, you’ll definitely find it here!

Lavande Hotel Mingsheng Plaza

Lavande is a budget-friendly chain hotel option. We stayed at one of their branches in Beijing, and we were super happy with it!

While I love travel, I love doing it for cheap. But I also don’t like when my hotel FEELS cheap, you know? Thankfully, Lavande Hotels tend to be super comfy and clean (with great breakfasts!) and a nice price tag.

Hotels in Xinjiang: Summary

Planning a trip to Kanas, Turpan, or Korla? I HIGHLY recommend going with a tour group, or at least finding reliable hotels through one!

With major cities, it’s pretty easy to find a decent hotel. But with smaller cities, you’re taking a lot more of a gamble with the quality, as well as whether or not they’ll be able to host you.

Fingers crossed that the new measures to help foreigners stick their hotel bookings works out!

Have more questions about Xinjiang Hotels? I’d love to hear them in the comments!
