This list of Macedonia Park destinations will give you a glimpse into some of Macedonia’s must-see spots. With brief descriptions of each site and its location, you’ll get a clear idea of which parks are for you!
I keep saying that Macedonia is one of the most slept-on European travel spots. In other words, it’s AMAZING, and yet it makes so few Euro-travel lists!
Macedonia’s nature is just breathtaking. I kept being blown away by how we’d end up going from simple scenery to some utterly jaw-dropping views.
Thankfully, we had our local Skopje friends whose wedding we were visiting for taking us around, so they gave us the inside scoop on Macedonia’s parks, which I’ll now share with you!
I’m going to split these parks into two categories: Day-Trip parks and Half-Day parks.
Day-Trip parks will require a full day (or in Lake Ohrid’s case, even more!) devoted to it. Half-Day parks can be fitted into your day around other activities, and shouldn’t require more than several hours.
Full-Day Macedonia Park Experiences
The following parks in Macedonia will take a day (or more!) to visit. Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to go through these beautiful spots!
1. Lake Ohrid: The Ultimate Lake Day
I did NOT get to visit Ohrid, as my fiancé and I had to leave our friends early to meet with his family in Türkiye. HOWEVER, the rest of my friend group went…and I was so jealous.
Ohrid is several hours away from Skopje by car, so it’s normal for people to spend multiple days there and book a hotel in the area.
Lake Ohrid is the OLDEST lake in Europe, and it feels too big to be a lake (especially when you consider that Israel’s much SMALLER lake is named the ‘Sea of Galilee’…riddle me that). It’s just massive!
Visitors can rent out boats, enjoy the lakeside, and breathe in the fresh mountain air made even fresher by the seemingly endless Ohrid waters.
Ohrid is a vacation spot of its own, so it’s really recommended to spend a night here (which was why we couldn’t fit it in…so sad).
2. Matka Canyon: Hiking & Boating
Matka Canyon holds a stunning turquoise river which cuts through Matka’s rocky cliffs. With absolutely breathtaking scenery, and being not too far from Skopje, a visit is a must!
Full disclosure: I actually did Matka as a half-day trip with my friends. Using their cars, we drove to Matka from Skopje, hired a boat to the caves, enjoyed cocktails in the cafe, and were back in Skopje about 5 hours later.
However, there was lots at Matka we DIDN’T do. So in other words, Matka can fit your schedule and desires pretty nicely.
3. Pelister National Park: Mountains & Winter Skiing
This park is a day-trip from Ohrid, but most likely too far to make it in a day from Skopje.
Pelister National Park boasts gorgeous mountains which are covered in pines. In the wintertime, skiers flock to the mountains to shred some snow!
In the summertime, there are hiking trails galore! So if you’re a hiker, you may want to make some time for Pelister.
4. Mavrovo Lake: A Lake Option Closer to Skopje
Located about halfway between Skopje and Ohrid, Mavrova Lake’s “Sunken Church” attracts visitors from all over Europe!
From what I understand, Mavrovo lake can be a day trip from Skopje. If you don’t have time for Lake Ohrid, Mavrovo Lake may be a good option!
5. Galicica National Park: Ohrid From Above
One of Macedonia’s vast national parks, Galicica provides hiking trails galore which will give you some pretty fantastic views of Lake Ohrid!
As a bonus, wildlife lovers claim that there are plenty of birds, lizards, and frogs to spot throughout. If you’re staying in Ohrid, Galicica park is an absolute must!
Half-Day Macedonia Park Experiences
The following Macedonia park locations can be fitted as a partial-day experience!
6. Skopje City Park: Enjoying Local Life
In the heart of Skopje, Macedonia’s capital city, this little park is a local hangout where you can spot everyday life happening.
There’s nothing crazy exciting about this park (though I was very excited about the natural spring water fountains everywhere), but if nothing else, it’s a chance to slow down and enjoy the city.
Parents and children played together, people sat on blankets in the grass under large, mature trees…it was quiet and lovely, and worth a visit if you’re in Skopje!
I wrote a bit more about the park in this post!
7. Mount Vodno & Millennium Cross
Mount Vodno and the Millennium Cross could easily be a day trip if you wanted it to be. However, if you’re short on time (like I was), a half-day to Millennium Cross is totally doable!
I go over all of the details for how to visit the Millennium Cross in this post, and explain how we made the whole trip in less than 2 hours.
A heads up: while the Cross may look underwhelming from the city, it is MUCH more impressive up close! So definitely go see it!
8. Skopje zoo: A Capital Token Piece
My Macedonian friend described Skopje’s zoo as: “because we have a capital so it should have a zoo”. In other words, it’s nothing impressive in her opinion.
If you’re an animal lover and have time to kill in Skopje, then a visit to the zoo will of course be a welcome addition to your trip. But if you’re like me and doing cultural tourism, then you just may pass on this one.
Summary
There are plenty of locations that I didn’t add to this list, just because personally I found the locations quite inconvenient. But if you have time to explore outside of Skopje and Ohrid, there’s SO much more to Macedonia!
Hopefully this list got you started with ideas for your itinerary and got you excited to take in Macedonia’s beauty!
