Macedonia Weather: Helpful Travel Guide for All Seasons

Is Macedonia on your Euro-vacation destination list? How exciting! This post will cover all you need to know about Macedonia weather, so that you can pack and prepare for success!

Summertime Macedonia Weather

Since most tourism happens in the summer, let’s start here!

I visited Skopje in August. The weather in Macedonia at that point was quite hot! At the highest, temperatures reached 95ºF (35ºC). In the nights, the weather would still be quite warm, going no lower than 72ºF (22ºC).

For me, this meant that in the daytime, I was comfortable in shorts and sundresses. In the evenings, since comparatively 72º feels much colder than the daytime temps, I needed a light sweater.

Rainy Weather in Macedonia’s Summertime

Also, the summertime can bring more intense rainstorms. We were visiting Skopje for a wedding, and between the ceremony and the reception, the sky went from perfectly blue to just DUMPING rain.

Umbrellas and waterproof shoes (flip flops or slippers) are a must for these summer rainstorms. The downpour was absolutely brutal and people were soaked after just a few minutes outside.

From what I’ve read (and heard from my Skopje friends), the summertime weather spans from June to September, with July and August being the most intense months in terms of heat.

So if you’re visiting Macedonia in the summertime, bring your lightweight summer clothes, and a little something warmer for the evenings!

Autumn Weather in Macedonia

A mild and gradual transition to Winter happens in Macedonia during October and November. Temperatures will not hit above 70ºF (21ºC), and usually will not drop below 50ºF (10ºC).

In other words, you’re looking at sweater weather, or maybe a light jacket, during the autumn season.

Nights during the autumn season can drop to the low 40’s Fahrenheit (4-6ºC), and rain is not common. For going out in the evenings, you’ll definitely want to be more bundled up.

Winter Weather in Macedonia

From December to the end of February or early March, Macedonia experiences a full-blown winter. Temperatures can go as low as 10ºF (-12ºC) in the cities, and can be much lower in the more rural areas.

Snow is common, and weather tends to be cloudier during the winter months. Pack winter coats, snow-capable shoes, hats, gloves, and every other winter-necessity.

Spring Weather in Macedonia

Springtime in Macedonia spans from early-mid March until May. During this transition from Winter to Summer, temperatures can be as low as 50ºF (10ºC) and as high as 70ºF (21ºC), very similarly to Autumn temperatures.

In the earliest days of Spring in Macedonia, evening temperatures are low enough to require jackets. Nearing May, evenings will still be cool, but warm enough that a sweater should keep you warm enough.

Spring in Macedonia tends to be rainy! If you travel at any point during the spring, it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll experience a rainy day or two. So be prepared with an umbrella!

When Is The Weather In Macedonia Best for Tourists?

Personally, I’d go for Summer or Autumn, as much of Macedonia’s best tourist sites are outdoors. As Springtime is quite rainy, and winter quite cold, it won’t be so comfortable to tour at that time.

Of course, snowy European scenery is quite lovely, as are springtime greens and flowers. So if those are the kinds of aesthetics you’re after, then you’ll want to visit in the winter or spring.

Ultimately, when you visit Macedonia is up to you and your body’s preferences!

I hope this little guide to Macedonia weather was helpful to you, and makes your packing process easier! Still have questions? I’m super happy to answer them in the comments!
