Skopje Restaurants You WON’T Want TO Miss!

Want to save yourself hours of digging around on apps for the best Skopje restaurants? I’ve got you covered! These restaurants are ones that either I’ve visited personally, or my Skopje-born friend recommends. So lets jump in!

Skopje Restaurants: What To Look For

Want to make sure you’re getting what the locals get? Look for these items on the menu:

  • Chorba (breakfast)
  • Gravce tavce (baked beans)
  • Pastrmajlija (Macedonian pizza)
  • Sarma
  • Kebapi
  • Sharshka pleskavica
  • Selsko meso (villager’s meat)

Macedonian food is fresh, not heavy, and filled with meaty, savory flavors. While most restaurants should give you some variation of local favorites, the restaurants listed below offer great food AND amazing environments.

Dukat: A Top Breakfast Spot

An amazing stop with some of the best chorba (meat soup) you’ll find around, Dukat provides a shaded and cozy dining environment.

Dukat was actually the first place I went to in Skopje straight from the airport! Our local friend took us there, and between the chorba, salad, and amazing cheese plates, we were immediately hooked!

Baba Cana Vodno: Mountainside Dining

Located near the foot of Mount Vodno, which the Millennium Cross stands atop of, this restaurant has great prices and a stunning view of the city!

Plus there’s rooftop seating where you can enjoy the view while enjoying your Macedonian cuisine. Huge win!

Kamnik Winery: Fine Dining

If wine tasting is your thing, this beautiful villa outside of the city will give you an amazing experience. Plus, it also has great food choices and lovely views.

The property can be rented for events such as weddings, and I have no idea if this affects regular diners. So just be aware on summer weekends. It may be best to call ahead and make sure before trekking out for the evening!

cafe Dion Restaurant: Skopje Downtown Center

Of all the Skopje restaurants we visited, this one was probably my favorite!

Not just because the food was fantastic, but also because of the location. Situated right next to the center of Skopje downtown, the riverside view is fantastic.

Plus, after dinner, we were just a five minute walk from the bazaar, where we got some baklava to top things off!

Skopske Merak: Local Favorites

This Skopje restaurant serves Mediterranean and European cuisine, and will have all of the locals’ favorites. If you’re looking for an authentic Macedonian meal, you’ll definitely find it here!

One of their more interesting dishes is a patty baked in dough, topped with a dollop of cream. I didn’t get to try it, but my local friends seem to love it!

Barbakan: Western Food & Social Hub

For folks wanting International cuisines and solid cocktails, Barbakan has you covered! Of all of the Skopje restaurants mentioned, this one will provide the most international variety (though Cafe Dion also has a lot).

Conveniently located next to a popular club, this joint serves as a post work and pre-party venue, so you’re bound to find some good times here!

Summary

From what I experienced, it’s pretty hard to go wrong with restaurants in Skopje! However, the restaurants on this list are tried and true, sure to be hits.

You’re in for such a treat with Macedonian cuisine! I hope you’ll enjoy these Skopje restaurants as much as we did! Let me know if you tried any of these restaurants in the comments!
