KaiDiRui Zhuafan: BEST Xinjiang Restaurant!
If you want the most TRADITIONAL Xinjiang food, made in the most DELICIOUS way, then you HAVE to visit Kaidirui! (in Chinese: 开蒂锐)
Kaidirui is a chain restaurant, with locations all over Xinjiang. So you should be able to easily find one wherever you’re staying in Xinjiang!
This restaurant is famous for two things: first, its “shouzhuafan” (written in Chinese: 手抓饭), a sweet and savory rice dish with local meat, carrots and raisins.
Secondly, it’s “chuan” (written in Chinese: 串 or 串儿) which are beef or lamb kebabs. Their kebabs are absolutely divine!!
If you visit Kaidirui, definitely get a portion of shouzhuafan, kebabs, and also their bopi steamed dumplings (written in Chinese: 薄皮包子).
Xinjiang’s Kebab Restaurants
Honestly, I don’t have a restaurant recommendation for this dish…because there are kebab restaurants on pretty much EVERY corner of Xinjiang’s streets!
And they’re ALL GOOD!!
Seriously, the local meat is roasted to perfection and just melts in your mouth. So find yourself any place your heart leads you to!
Ask for some lamb kebabs (in Chinese: yangrou chuan, or 羊肉串) or beef kebabs (in Chinese: niurou chuan or 牛肉串).
Trust me, you will have NO trouble finding an amazing Xinjiang Kebab Restaurant!
Kazakh Milk Tea Restaurants
Xinjiang is a cultural hub for local minorities, and back in the day was a major hub on the silk road.
One minority is people of Kazakh descent, and they serve some pretty memorable breakfasts!
You’ll want to look for Kazakh Milk Tea restaurants, (written in Chinese: 哈萨克族油奶茶馆).
If you’re in Urumqi, you can specifically look for the Yi Xiangsu Milk Tea Restaurant (written in Chinese: 伊香酥油奶茶馆).
There are SO many varieties of Kazakh breakfasts around Urumqi, so just ask around and locals will probably be able to point you in the right direction!
BEST Xinjiang Breakfast Restaurant
One of the HIGHLIGHTS of our trip in Xinjiang was Livant Coffee Restaurant (in Chinese: 黎弯德咖啡厅). They had this beautiful atmosphere and the most AMAZING breakfast!
Best of all, it was super affordable, clocking in at around $10 USD per person. For a restaurant where your waiters are wearing suits and white gloves… I’d say that’s a steal!
Summary: Xinjiang Restaurant
There are honestly SO many good restaurants in Xinjiang, so the question won’t be how to find one. It’ll be how to CHOOSE one!
I hope this post gave you some guidance about where to go, and especially what to eat.
Remember: as long as you know which local Xinjiang food to get, you’ll probably end up somewhere that does the dish justice.
You’ll have no trouble finding your perfect Xinjiang restaurant! With such amazing cuisine, you’re in for such a treat!
